The Incident Of The Fort Hood Shooting - 1108 Words
On November 5, 2009, the public gained knowledge about an incident that took place at an U.S. Army installation. Maj. Nidal Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, fatally shot 13 people and injured more than 30 others. He was facing a deployment to one of the many war zones overseas (McFadden, 2009). There are many reports about this incident and what actually took place. From what Iââ¬â¢ve gathered, Hasan went into a processing center where soldiers go before and after they come back from deployment. After Hasanââ¬â¢s shooting rampage, he was finally stopped when Army Military Police (MP) officers shot him a total of four times. He is now paralyzed from the waist down due to the shooting. The Fort Hood shooting marked the worst shooting ever to take place on a military installation state side, to record. There was almost no structural damage because he used hand guns instead of bombs, or what we call weapons of mass destruction. This attack is classified as a terrorist attack simply because of what the intention was at the beginning. In my own words, terrorist(s) is someone or groups that have different beliefs and want to force their belief onto you by any means necessary, which may include killing if one doesnââ¬â¢t comply. That is one in five soldiers actually shooting at a Nazi when he sees one. â⬠(Frisbee Jr) This surprising fact clearly indicates how hard it is to kill without emotions. This fact also indicates our human nature. Emotions are the essential and necessary part of humans. In one way, humans are differentiated from animals and emotionless machines. This human nature of ours makes us think or stops us in order to kill without emotions. When humans are hardwired to be empathetic and compassionate not to kill, it is hard to understand why there is so much killing in the world? How, with empathy and compassion, can people kill? They must override their emotions with stronger emotions of hate and notions of purpose based on their beliefs. In the following paragraphs will present few examples that will indicate why and how some people override their emotions with stronger emotions based on their purpose. A common example of this is of a suicide bomber. So how these suicide bombers are formed or what is the psychology involved behind suicide bombing. . Often the suicide bombers arrested in Pakistan are usually teenagers and are from a poor background. They are usually kidnapped on their way to school or madraassa (religious school) and then brainwashed. Research and Todayââ¬â¢s media reveals that suicide bombers using their religion as a shield justifies what they are doing are right. During brainwashing they are kept isolated and given misleading information on the name of the religion. They are told by the corrupt religious leaders that killing of the non Muslims are justified according to their religion. In addition to this they are also told that dying in the name of their religion will earn them the rank of a martyred. They are also brainwashed that they will earn a high rank in the heavens and rivers of milk and honey and beautiful virgins await. (Yusufzai and Jamal). They are offered high price to get the job done. They are assured that their family will live wealthy life after their job is done. Almost 90% of the suicide bombers are normal humans but, after knowing the position they can earn by dying in the name of their religion, change their emotions to kill hundreds of innocent humans. From this above example it can be concluded that they simple overcome their emotions with stronger emotions of earning high rank in Heavens by dying in the name of the religion, securing the lives of their family and obeying the orders of God. Another type of the people who override their emotions to kill are the soldiers. Soldiers override their emotions for certain reasons that they learn during the training. During the training there are told that they are the protectors of the land. The lives of their families and their countrymen depend on them. Moreover, they are trained with the fact that what they are doing is right and justified and God is with them. The training for the soldiers keeps on the changing with time to time. The soldiers are given complete training/ practicing area. The soldiers are desensitized by making them shoot at human shaped paper targets, drill and then to moving targets and pop up targets look kind of human shape making their response automatic and focusedâ⬠. (Dwyer). The training areas includes all kinds of difficult pathways, underground tunnels and sudden appearance of the human shaped targets which they have shoot at and take them down. They are also congratulated on their first kill which increases their confidence to override their emotions more easily ââ¬Å"In addition to this there are addressed directly making them believe that they actually have to kill. (Robinson). ââ¬Å"Often a times the present the enemies in way that does not even feel like a human; for instance they will call their enemies by those names that even donââ¬â¢t look familiar. Names like ââ¬Å"gookâ⬠who knows what is gook? It does not sound like a human or a person. Half of the desensitizing and dehumanizing is made easier in presenting a person that does not even to our class or kind. In addition, saying that God is with us, we are fighting for the sake of our country and the people and God is proud of us. A lot of killing is made easier in this for the soldiers presenting these as a reason. â⬠(Pomerantz) So, with this kind of training and lessons of patriotism being given to the soldiers makes it easier to override to their emotions. In the conclusion I would restate again that killing without emotions is really hard unless you have you donââ¬â¢t overcome your emotions. It takes a lot of nerve and heart to kill without emotions. James Dickey Essay James Dickey launched his career as a poet surprisingly late in life. His first collection, Into the Stone and Other Poems, was published when he was thirty-seven years old. Dickeys experience in the military, academic, and advertising worlds before his emergence as a writer provided subjects and training for his art. Born on February 2, 1923 in Buckhead, Georgia, an Atlanta suburb, to lawyer Eugene Dickey and his wife Maibelle Swift Dickey, James graduated from North Fulton High School. In 1941 he entered Clemson A M College, where he played wingback on the football team. The following year he joined the Army Air Corps and as a member of the 418th Night Fighter Squadron was involved in more than one hundred bombing missions in the South Pacific. After World War II, Dickey attended Vanderbilt University, from which he received a B.A. in English magna cum laude in 1949 and an M.A. in English in 1950. While at Vanderbilt, he published four poems in the campus literary magazine, The Gadfly, and one The Shark at the Window- in the Sewanee Review. During his undergraduate years he married Maxine Syerson, with whom he had two sons Christopher, born in 1951, and Kevin, born in 1958. Dickeys first teaching position, at Rice Institute in Houston, was interrupted when he was recalled by the air force for service in Korea. Following his discharge, he returned to Rice but left there in 1954 to travel and write in Europe on a Sewanee Review fellowship. A 1956 teaching appointment in the University of Florida English department was cut short when Dickey resigned because of a dispute over his reading of his poem The Fathers Body. In April 1956, he began a successful career as copywriter and executive for advertising agencies in New York and Atlanta. During his years as an ad man, Dickey continued writing poetry, for which he received several awards, including Poetrys Union League Civic and Arts Foundation Prize in 1958 and both the Longview Foundation Award and the Vachal Lindsay Prize in 1959. During the 1960s, Dickey began to flourish as a poet-teacher. Following the publication of Into the Stone in 1960, he won a Guggenheim Fellowship, which allowed him to spend 1961-62 writing in Italy. Drowning with Others appeared in 1962; Helmets and a collection of reviews and essays, The Suspect in Poetry, in 1964; and Buckdancers Choice in 1965. For Buckdancers Choice he received the 1966 National Book Award for poetry. During this period Dickey also served as poet-in-residence at several colleges and universities. He spent time at Reed College (1963-64), San Fernando Valley State College (1964-65), and the University of Wisconsin at Madison (1966-67). From 1966 to 1968 he was Consultant in Poetry for the Library of Congress. Poems 1957-1967 was published in 1967 and Babel to Byzantium: Poets and Poetry Now in 1968. In 1969 Dickey became professor of English and writer-in-residence at the University of South Carolina, a position he held until his death. The 1970s saw Dickey experimenting with a wide variety of genres. In 1970 his novel, Deliverance, the collection The Eye-Beaters, Blood, Victory, Madness, Buckhead and Mercy, and a volume of essays, Self-Interviews, were published, followed the next year by Sorties, a journal and new essays. In 1972 he acted as scriptwriter and consultant for the movie version of Deliverance, which won several Academy Award nominations and in which he played the role of Sheriff Bullard. Jericho: The South Beheld, with text by Dickey and paintings by Hubert Shuptine, appeared in 1974. Dickey wrote the script for the television production of Jack Londons The Call of the Wild in 1975, and in 1976 he published the long poem The Zodiac. Munch Biography essays Edvard Munch is regarded as a pioneer in the Expressionist movement in modern painting. At an early stage Munch was recognized in Germany and central Europe as one of the creators of a new movement in art. Munch and many artists of the time needed to express their feelings about all the change that was happening around. Edvard Munch was born in Norway in 1863; he knew how a person's emotional pain feels. He was the son of an Army Medical Corp doctor who brought patients at home all the time. His mother died when he was only five years of age. His oldest sister died of disease at the age of fifteen. Edvard himself was often ill. One of his youngest sisters was also diagnosed with a mental illness at an early age. With death and illness as a major factor in his life he turned that into his own work. After a year at Technical school to study engineering, Munch became dedicated to his artwork. He left Technical school and entered into a school of design. Sometime in 1886 he produced the painting titled The Sick Child. In this painting his thoughts of the death of his older sister were let out and they were rather haunting. Around this same year Munch finished a series of paintings title The Sick Child. In this same year when all this occurred another catastrophe happened in Munch's life, the death of his father. After having a one-man exhibition at Oslo, he managed to gain state scholarships, which enabled him to move to France. He had a way with French Impressionist techniques and while living in Paris he explored a way of painting that would focus on the art symbolism and expressing of emotions through applications of paint and certain techniques. Munch had a series of paintings that were exhibited in a major art show in Berlin.
